About

Feminist. Democrat. Knitter. Passionate. Obsessed. Lesbian. Mommy.

The Mafia lives with Little Man and kitty Grace in a condo in a renovated shoe factory in northern Massachusetts. I work at MIT and share my Thursday lunch hour with the fabulous MIT Stitch and Bitch.

Random Things About Me (an ever-evolving list):

1. I have a heart-shaped birthmark above my right knee.

2. If a piece of food is larger than a pea and smaller than a plum (think M&Ms, Reeses Pieces, pasta), I eat it in pairs so that I know whether there was an even or odd number in the bag/box/bowl. When it’s multicolored, I eat them in color-matched pairs so that I know if there are odd or even numbers of each color.

3. My favorite sock yarn is Sophie’s Toes. It’s soft, it wears well, and the colors are simply amazing. Also, Emily’s quilts are stunning.

4. Danielle’s office is directly across the hall from mine. Sometimes I stare at her until she notices and then engage in some wacky sign language for “go read the yarn harlot” or “check your email.”

5. I was born in San Diego and raised in rural upstate New York, and at my core, I’m a working-class sapphic redneck hippie. And a yuppie.

6. My hair is growing longer, mostly due to parenting-induced laziness, but it’s causing an identity crisis because lesbians have stopped giving me ‘the look’ and I’m starting to get it from men again. This doesn’t happen in Northampton. In Northampton, I get checked out all the time and I LOVE it.

7. I’m just shy of 5′7″ and generally hover around 200 pounds. Yes, I’m fat. Strike that: I just lost 25 pounds, but I’m not sure how long it will last.

8. I was a cheerleader in high school. I can’t do a split anymore, but I could lift you over my head.

9. I went to a community college, and then to an elite women’s college. The transition was seriously trippy.

10. This is a big surprise to me, and to everyone who knows me well — I really enjoy being a mom.

11. I’m a little shy in new environments.

12. If I’m with someone else, I absolutely won’t walk into a restaurant first. Why, you ask? Because everyone looks up for a split second whenever someone walks in the door (pay attention & you’ll notice it), and I can’t deal with that many eyes on me.

13. I have colitis AND crohn’s. Yeah, it sucks. And it’s easier to come out as a dyke than to tell anyone about these diseases.

14. Little Man climbs into bed with me every night between 2am and 6am. I’m fine with it … as long as he stops before college.

15. I typically pick up new hobbies, obsess over them, learn everything I can, and then quit. Knitting is the only one that’s stuck around.

16. In past years, I’ve made jewelry, scrapbooks, cards and candles, and although I don’t do those crafts anymore (see #15), I still have the supplies if I want to start again.

17. Actually, #15 isn’t entirely true. I love quilting, and I don’t know everything about it. In fact, much like knitting, I learn as much as I need to accomplish a specific piece.

18. I used to do 95% of my knitting on the train, but now that I’m driving to work, I’m struggling to find time to sit and knit.

19. I used to ride the train with Beth almost every day, but since I started driving every day (to facilitate grad school & co-parenting), I barely see her. This makes me sad. I miss seeing her everyday.

20. I really want a Ph.D., both for the academic regalia and the pride of such an accomplishment (see #5). I used to be hell-bent on getting a PhD in Women’s Studies (or Sociology with a gender focus), but now that I’m doing an MBA, I’m thinking that Organizational Behavior with a gender focus would be very fulfilling. However, after I complete my MBA, I wonder if I’ll have the stamina to keep going to school.

21. Speaking of grad school, in August of 2007 I started a part-time MBA at the Simmons College School of Management, the only all-women’s MBA program in the country. Up until recently, when the Dubai Women’s College created an MBA partnership with the University of Strathclyde in Glaskow, the Simmons program was the only all-women’s MBA program in the world.

22. As of Saturday, September 15, 2007, I am going through a divorce. It wasn’t my choice and I’m devestated. Apparently there is no chance of reconciliation. We almost made it to our 6th wedding anniversary, the 1st anniversary of owning our first house, and a few months beyond our son’s 4th birthday. The woman formerly known as Wifey is now known as Xifey. Her girlfriend lived NEXT DOOR to our house.

23. As of November 26, 2007, I signed off all rights and responsibilities to Ms. 1890, my antique house. On November 30, 2007, I bought a condo in a converted shoe factory. I love it.

24. I convinced Xifey to agree to 50-50 joint custody, so we will co-parent Little Man.

25. Despite the divorce, I still completely and utterly support Gay Marriage. Everyone should have the right to suck someone’s soul out through their eyeball.
