Favorite Things Monday: My Wooly Peeps

April 28, 2008

It all started, innocently enough, with a beautiful photo of a wonderful friend by an excellent photographer:

That evolved into a simple conversation on Flickr:

And then my imagination ran away with me:

The take-away:
1) I miss these gals.
2) I am SO ready for festival season.
3) I can’t believe they still like me.

So, I’m curious — what do YOU think Manise was doing with the stick?

ETA: Perhaps I should turn this into a contest?  Since Cheryl, Manise, Beth & Laurie are such good sports (presumably… ), they can pick the best answer and I’ll send sock yarn.

i think she’s using the stick to “goose” people.

she seems mild-mannered there, but she’s a little bit of a perv. she won’t stop hugging me. ;)

Only one other comment, and already I’m far outclassed. Yay for festival season!

  • 3. Maritza  |  April 28, 2008 at 7:19 pm

I believe that may be her prying stick which she uses to pry other fiber-hungry knitters away from the yarns/rovings/knitty objects she may have her eye on.

I think I figured it out: She was pretending to be blind so that she could get all the good fiber for herself. She’d pop on some shades, shuffle up to a booth, fondle all the wool, and grab the best for herself. Who would yank yarn from a blind woman’s hand?

    She’s wily, that Manise.

I think she’s beating off all the other shoppers so that she can get the best fleece for herself. She’s a mean one, that Manise.

  • 6. Sara  |  April 28, 2008 at 9:27 pm

I think she’s conducting a little sheepie orchestra.

  • 7. Cheryl  |  April 28, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Maryse’s comment is killing me! Hilarious! Poor manise had to endure alot of laughs at her expense after she picked up that stick.

  • 8. Ruth  |  April 28, 2008 at 10:17 pm

I think she’s conjuring some Wollmeise out of thin air.

    She’s magic, that Manise.

Sheesh — I didn’t go this year and look at all the craziness I missed with that stick!

I think she’s using the stick to do a soft shoe and have the sheep follow her (in a parade) into the shearing barn. And then after they are sheared, she uses the stick to beat back other spinners!

  • 10. Joan  |  April 29, 2008 at 12:50 am

She’s beating the men off with it!
(oh, er…. poor choice of words. Really, I didn’t quite mean it to come out that way. Ew! Gads! sorry. I’ll think I’ll beat a hasty retreat. DOH!!! stumble stumble… sounds of crashing pots and pans….)

OH! I know! She’s conducting Gian Carlo MiKnitty’s Amahl and the Knit Visitors - The Shepherd’s Chorus!
    And a one and a two and a three…..

  • 11. Manise  |  April 29, 2008 at 8:43 am

OMG! How did I miss this last evening?? Imagine my surprise to see my face plastered on your home page? And then to scroll down and read the hilarious sitcom unfold down the page. Mafia you are funny!! And Cheryl? You are so dead :-) I can’t stop laughing….. you guys are the best!

What’s next? The wooden carved pierced needle case which turns out to originally be a flea catcher per Marcy?

  • 12. Beth S.  |  April 29, 2008 at 9:45 am

I told Manise she should use it on her kids, but for some reason she didn’t seem to think that would be such a good idea. Oh well. ;-)

I think it was Marcy who put a really fantastic spin on that idea–that Manise should use it to defend herself against aggressive stroller-pushers at Rhinebeck.

Was she herding sheep — was there some sort of sheep herding demo and they were getting volunteers from the audience? Sort of like “Be a Border Collie for day”?

  • 14. Lucia  |  April 29, 2008 at 11:15 am

We saw her from afar, with stick, and wondered the same thing. I think she’s dowsing for yarn.

  • 15. Manise  |  April 29, 2008 at 11:38 am

Beth- it was actually having two of the sticks and holding them at my sides sticking straight out like a double wide stroller and cruising down the aisles at festivals twirling around saying “Excuse me” and commandeering the entire space in the booths! I’d be shot very quickly by all the fiber fanatics- oh that includes me too. Maybe not such a good idea, ya think?

  • 16. Beth S.  |  April 29, 2008 at 11:40 am

    Dowsing!!! OK, Lucia FTW.

  • 17. Rhonda the Stitchingnut  |  April 29, 2008 at 12:12 pm

Dowsing for fiber I suppose. Looks like a Shepard’s staff maybe but without the crook at the top. But I can’t think of anything funny to do with it. I’m just not that kind of gal you know. Really. No really.

  • 18. Sarahfish  |  April 29, 2008 at 4:30 pm

It gives her extra reach to get at the good yarn. Yoink! No one knew what happened, and how that skein they were just about to buy disappeared right out from under their noses…

Looks like you guys had a great time!

  • 19. Laurie  |  April 29, 2008 at 6:07 pm

Ohmigod, I’m in stitches, and I can’t believe Maf got a whole post out of this WITHOUT EVEN BEING THERE. Very very clever!

I have a vote. And I’ll forward it to FMaf.

  • 20. Marcy  |  April 29, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Maryse is pretty close, though perved.

Actually the stick is for poking people who have the nerve to get between Manise and the fiber o’ her dreams. It’s used much as you’d use a pool cue. Poke poke! And they positively leap out of her way, giving her free access to the prize.

And Mafia, how did you know about Laurie’s dance??!!??!? Ya shoulda been there!

  • 21. Sharon Rose  |  April 29, 2008 at 8:40 pm

It’s her custom pool cue so she can hustle all the other attendees out of their purchases. :)

  • 22. Haddy  |  April 30, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Oh man! You’re back! I missed you!
