Life Chapters

Chapter 1
Little Man has been acting out a bit, so we had some serious Q.T. this weekend. Without fail, our Q.T. ends up being some variation of body painting, which is certainly encouraged in his new favorite book: I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More, a hilarious tale about a kid who’s seriously into body painting. Anyway … the design is 100% Little Man. I’m his ‘high level assistant’, helping here and there, mostly when he wants something to be “stripe-ity.” I paint a stripe, ask which color comes next, paint another stripe, and so on … I take no ownership of the design elements. This is pure 4.5 year old work.

Chapter 2
Dr. Hot and I went to the new Institute of Contemporary Art on Sunday. Strangely, I was petrified of spending time with another single lesbian. I wasn’t a total geek, but I wasn’t exactly Ms. Charming 2008 either. By way of explanation, I hid behind the fact that art makes me introspective. She was both charming and a little nervous, which was sweet. Nobody said the word “date”, but I believe it was one.

I loved this David Muller work called As Below, So Above, which chronicled the development of rock and roll and had an audio soundtrack of the artist’s music. The soundtrack was like an iTunes party shuffle on crack.

I did not enjoy Kader Attia’s work. So.freaking.creepy! I suppose it’s good art, because it evoked such a strong emotional reaction in me. But I didn’t like it one bit. {shudder}

Bourgeois in Boston was excellent. There was a description of spirals that I regret not photographing because I can’t find it online. Overall, I really like her work, except that I nearly walked out of the museum when I saw her room-sized bronze spider. I leaned over to Dr. Hot and said, “I’m going to have nightmares about this for a week,” and yes, they’ve already started. Fun times, arachnophobia. Fun times.

Chapter 3
I have been knitting on the Rhiannon sock here and there, and have completed repeat #2. I love it deeply and intensely. Cables make me so freakin’ happy. It must be genetic, because it’s completely irrational.

Chapter 4
With any luck, I’ll soon be able to blog about two mini-projects that have been flying under the blogdar for the last two weeks. I’m hoping for good news and once I get it, I’ll blog it. Oh the agony of waiting for news.

Some boys just never get tired of the paint. My 16YO still wants me to paint his face at halloween and he can’t resist drawing all over himself on a daily basis at school. Said boy is now considering art as a major in college. Feed their interests I say, why stifle? :) Gotta love those stripes!

Ohhhhh body painting sounds like a good way to have some Q.T. together. Divorce is tough on the little ones, and it sounds like you are taking good care of him!

  • 3. Carole  |  January 14, 2008 at 9:34 pm

A date, huh? I think that’s great news. And I adore that sock!

  • 4. Lisa  |  January 14, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Body painting is never a bad thing. Just go with it. Love the art links. The sock is looking great!

Date…..wonderful news, no matter what we call it…

Beautiful sock and gorgeous paint! Is that soap paint by chance? My boys LOVED their soap paint when they were still in their tub days…

And two single lesbians at an art studio? Sounds like a date to me!!!!

The sock looks fantastic, as does LM’s body art. It sounds like you had fun together, and I’m glad you got it on camera!

What fun! and not just boys–my 10 yo daughter and her friend (okay, he’s a boy but it was her idea) recently occupied themselves happily and productively for over an hour, drawing on themselves and each other with Sharpies. Smiley faces on the ends of their noses, yet. Fortunately they were in a public place the whole time or I can’t begin to imagine what might have happened.

  • 8. Heather  |  January 14, 2008 at 10:28 pm

So good to see you having an all around good time. LOVE LM’s body painting — too fun!

  • 9. PainterWoman  |  January 15, 2008 at 2:00 am

IMHO paint at 5 is better than tats at 16.

  • 10. CTJen  |  January 15, 2008 at 8:45 am

LM’s paints look beautiful and good luck w/ Dr. Hot. It sounds… promising. Also, I am sending good thoughts and prayers to your friend. :-)

I say: children should be treated like clothes: machine washable. ha ha ha. My philosophy is “if it washes off, what’s the problem?”

I haven’t been to the ICA yet… I’m afraid of the spider (and it’s the reason I won’t go in yet).

  • 12. femiknitter  |  January 15, 2008 at 9:40 am

Heh, I love the body painting, and I’m much, much older than the Little Man. Sounds like a great way to spend time together doing something constructive. Plus, he’s developing a good eye for color, which is never a bad thing!

I totally understand in irrational excitement in creating cool cables. I feel it too, and it makes me feel like a 5 year old.

  • 13. Kat with a K  |  January 15, 2008 at 10:15 am

Love the painting and the sock! I might need to try that one.

  • 14. Jenn  |  January 15, 2008 at 11:14 am

I LOVE the ICA. I finally went there over the summer. The room sized spider didn’t scare me in person though hearing about it ahead of time I had some concerns.

Sounds like fun! Also, I love the body painting. That’s awesome. And I understand the love of cabling. I only have 2 cabled thing that I’ve made because I’m a VERY IMPATIENT knitter, but sometimes I like to just look at it and sigh. Lame.

  • 15. Jenn  |  January 15, 2008 at 11:14 am

oops that was supposed to say 1 cabled thing. d’oh.

  • 16. Haddy  |  January 15, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Your sock is an inspiration. I’ve been coveting CookieA’s German Stocking pattern for months. Some day….

Oh yeah…. and I need to go to the ICA too!

  • 17. leah  |  January 15, 2008 at 1:17 pm

i showed steel uterius lms stripes, they made her smile. she is feeling better today!

  • 18. britt  |  January 15, 2008 at 1:30 pm

looks like fun, i don’t live close enough to cool kids that would let me paint with them, but I love it!
PS I went to building 19 and picked up two quilt books ;-)

  • 19. Lucia  |  January 15, 2008 at 1:38 pm

Remind me to tell you my body-paint story sometime. Seems like a great, safe and harmless way to blow off steam. (My daughter dyed the front locks of her hair blue recently. I didn’t object. I plan to let her make her hair whatever color she likes, but she’s still not getting her ears pierced or wearing makeup in public until she’s 15.)

    Re dating, YIKES. And congrats.

Re cables, I love ‘em too. I’m embroiled in Fair Isle and brioche at the moment. Gotta get back to cables.

  • 20. maryse  |  January 15, 2008 at 2:05 pm

next step is body paint with dr. hot.

  • 21. Rhonda the Stitchingnut  |  January 15, 2008 at 4:07 pm

A buddy young artist needs to experiment with a variety of median and what the heck, body paint washes off riht? Great time to communicate … while being creatively colorful.

    Love the cable socks!

  • 22. Ruth  |  January 15, 2008 at 7:11 pm

He has quite an eye for color, does LM.

  • 23. Jill  |  January 15, 2008 at 9:42 pm

I have to hide Sharpies from my 14yo…she is forever drawing body art on herself. At least they DO wear/wash off in time, just like her currently pink hair. Enjoy this stage with LM. Indulging him with this small thing shows him you are listening to him and care about the man he becomes, not just the boy he is now.

Am loving the socks. Serious droolage and sock-lust going on here. Knit faster…need to see more pictures soon! lol.

Oh, honey, that was sooooo a date. Sounds like a good time, too.
