Rhinebeck bound?
September 30, 2007
It’s beginning to look a lot like christmas. My dear sweet mommy offered to pay for the hotel room so I could go to Rhinebeck. [she has this cah-razy idea that i really need to get away] Xifey is willing to take Little Man for the weekend. There are just a couple final details I have to work out, the most important of which is:
1) Is anyone driving from Cambridge/Boston after work on Friday evening/night and wouldn’t mind a slightly depressed but totally capable of talking strictly about knitting for 3 hours car companion for the ride out there (not back)?
2) I’ve only been to small festivals before. Any idea how much cash I should set aside for this insanity? Please include the cost of highly alcoholic beverages in the total.
* Within a few days I’ll probably write a little divorce FAQ because I’m getting a lot of the same questions. Stay tuned. It’ll be password protected, but probably won’t include too much dirt. I have to maintain some boundaries, right? [stop laughing!] No seriously, I don’t mind putting my shit out there, but Xifey doesn’t jive with the blog thing, so I need to respect her wishes. [hate that. that, always being the considerate person. hate that.]
** I’m all binge/purge on email. Some days I respond like a mad woman. Other days I just can’t bear to look at it. If you’ve emailed me in the last couple days, I swear I’m not ignoring you. I’ll get to it soon, I promise. And keep ‘em coming. They’re truly sustaining.

We’ll be going down on Thursday, since we’re vendors, but it’ll be good to see you and give you a big hug in person. We’re staying at the Holiday Inn in Kingston, which appears to have rooms available still if you can’t find space to crash elsewhere.

OMG I wish I could go, if you can tell me how/where to get a hotel room myself I would drive in heart beat. Of course there could be the problem with me working til 8, though i still wouldn’t mind it.

Sounds like an excellent chance to escape, if only for a couple days. Have fun and let me know what wheel you end up with

A bunch of us are taking the Web’s Party Bus and a friend of mine has a ticket she wants to sell…..probably won’t work but thought I would put it out there.
Distractions are good and distractions with yarn work even better.

That’s awesome you’re going! Getting away will be good for you and being surrounded by your fiber friends even better. Bring cash, checks and credit card. Download a list of the vendors and figure out ahead of time what you think you want to buy and set a budget for yourself. It’ll help keep the ” damage ” in check

So glad you are getting away, and I really, really hope you get a ride finalized superfast! I’ll ask around in my knitting group. Alas, I am not going (sob), but fully intend on making it a priority for next year!
I do hope all is well (as it can be) with you…I anxiously wait for your posts to see that you are OK.

I’m so excited! We are also at the Poughkeepsie Marriott. Let’s hear it for moms.
In my excitement let me not forget the daily dose: (((Mafia))) Hang in there, and, you know, the foot thing.

Oh, and about the cash — Rhinebeck is complete sensory overload. This will be my (pauses to count on fingers) sixth time, and it will still be true. Manise’s advice is excellent, and let me also say: scope first. Spend an hour or two just wandering about looking, with your wallet tucked deep in your bag, before buying a thing. (The exception is of course The Fold, where if you can score any of the gorgeous STR colors before they all fly away, more power to you. Last year they were completely denuded, at least of the wool stuff, roughly 20 minutes after official opening time.)
As for alcohol, since I don’t drink I am once again out of my depth here, but I will say that a clear head and fast reflexes are valuable assets.

I’m delurking to say that Marlena of Swatch This! and I will be passing through Boston and would be happy to carpool, but we’re going to be passing through in the morning. We’re going to stop for some yummy veg food and WEBS in Northampton at lunchtime, and then do the remainder of the drive. We’re coming back Sunday night.
So if your schedule opens up, let us know! We’d love to have you join.

Hi FKM,
I’ll be at Rhinebeck too, and it is my first time at a huge festival as well. I hope I can see you there.

Damn. I’d ride with you in a heartbeat, but as I’m in CA and it’s a BIT of a drive, I won’t be going. Someday I will though, damnit!
I hear you on the considerate person. I went through a nasty divorce about 6 years ago. Though he dragged me through the mud and a couple of other nasty things, I took the high road. As my brother told me at the time, ‘taking the high road sucks but it’s the right thing to do” - and that’s true. I didn’t want to regret any of my behavior later, and I don’t. I’m not implying that Xifey isn’t taking it too (I wouldn’t know) but just saying, it’s a good way to go.
Enjoy Rhinebeck! Buy fiber! Have fun and get away for a bit.

I’m also going for the first time. Can’t help with the ride, as I’m coming from the south. I’m staying at the Comfort Inn in Saugerties. I don’t know if they have any rooms left.

My wife and I are going to Rhinebeck on Friday. We were planning on leaving around 12 or so from Methuen. We are not meeting up with friends until dinner time so we can be somewhat flexible with the leaving time as we are not stopping anywhere before hand, so if you want to email me and see if we can do something, please feel free. (debbi62 on ravelry).

We’re coming up from another direction and will be of no use to you on the transportation front, but I am very much looking forward to meeting you (gasp) in person!
As for money…hmmm. Last year I brought $100, and that was so not enough. Of course, what the hell did I know, it was my first Rhinebeck. This year I’m taking $200 to cover gas and tolls and food (um, I’m hoping $50 covers all of that so that the rest can go towards FIBER!).

Don’t know how I missed your post dated Sunday. Glad you came up for air. I’d certainly drive you IF I WERE ON THE EAST COAST. *sigh* Have a terrific time. (I don’t suppose you are going to the Knitter’s Retreat in Lenox at the beginning of next month….? Will be there. Could probably swing transportation.) Great attitude on the FAQ’s. Your readers await.

I’ll be there too! We are staying at the Holiday Inn in Kingston and I will be at the fair all day on Saturday! As far as cash, lots of places take your debit or credit if you don’t want to carry too much. I never carry cash, only some for food and drink so if they don’t accept a card I just don’t buy it. Makes me feel safer somehow. I want to meet you finally!
