Favorite Things Monday: Focus on Favorites

July 30, 2007

The event went really well. We made more money than last year, and the leaders and donors seemed pleased. Despite taking Friday off to recuperate, the rest of the weekend sucked ass. A few glimmers of sweetness here and there, but mostly ass. So I’m focusing today on my favorite things … literally my Flickr favorites. I’m copying Ashley, ‘cuz I love me some Ashley.

And for those that enjoy Little Man stories, here’s one:
We’re in the children’s section of Borders last night, and I’m once again searching for this illusive book called Art that I flipped through many moons ago, regretted not buying, asked the help desk about several times (go ahead, try asking them for a book called “Art” that resides in the kid’s section - there are 18,000 results in the 4-8 age group alone) and have been searching for ever since. Meanwhile, Little Man dashes to the plush section, plays with Curious George and Blue and other harmless plushies for a bit. Fine, great. But then he discovers the gigonza pile of Bratz dolls.

LM: Mommy, look at these dolls! Aren’t they cool?

Mafia: No, I don’t like those dolls.

LM: Why? They’re cool!

Mafia: I don’t like them because they’re dressed like porn stars they don’t look like real girls.

LM: [walks away]

… mere moments later …

LM: Mommy, look at these dolls! Aren’t they cool?

Mafia: No dude. I already told you. I don’t like those dolls. They don’t look like real girls.

LM: But Mommy, that’s OK. They’re pretend only.

Mafia: [ummm ... shit ... how do I explain sexualization-of-children to a four year old? ... ] Hey look! It’s the Art book! I finally found it!

Mafia - Glad that the event was a success. Sorry that the weekend didn’t live up to the time off…..

Love the flickr montage….and the LM story.

As for “sexualization-of-children”, it is always a never ending struggle as a parent. I wish I could tell you that it gets easier, but I cannot. Especially since I have never raised a son. Just work as a team with Wifey and hope that what you teach sticks. Most of it will, but be prepared for what doesn’t. remember that children always emulate their parents even when we want them to do as I say, not as I do….

At least you’re treating LM as a person who can understand a reasonable explanation for not liking those dolls. And if you keep at it, even if it doesn’t appear to work every time, it will sink in. For some reason in reading this, I was reminded of the Golden Books I had as a child. They were all full of black magic marker, where my mom had crossed out the gender stereotypes (so that little Suzy was just as likely to be playing with her favorite truck as with a doll). Parents really do make a difference.

    Event- Congrats!
Crappy weekend - hope this week is better
Littleman/dolls - I am glad that someone else sees the oh so inappropriateness of those dolls. Keep trying, at some point (maybe when he is a bit older) he will understand
Art- That looks like a nifty book I will have to check it out

Now there’s even a Bratz live action movie. Z has been asking for the dolls and to see the movie. I have told her and R that we don’t like those dolls because the name Bratz means that they are disrespectful and we don’t approve of being disrespectful to other people. And they know that I mean it - yesterday I dragged them out of a turnpike Burger King (without paying or eating) because the staff were being incredibly rude about our order.

And yes, I’m having “Adult Child of PC Parents” t-shirts made for their high school graduations! :)

My 5-yr old insists that she WILL get some of those dolls. Ha! I ’splain to her over and over that those dolls are not for her but like you said how do I explain WHY I don’t like them?

  • 6. Ashley  |  July 30, 2007 at 9:25 pm

Awww…mutual. those little animal onesies in there are to die for.

Re: explaining the Bratz, I have only two things to say, neither particularly constructive: 1) Is LM too young to start reading I Blame the Patriarchy? And 2) Thank goodness there are women like you raising sons, because jeezum pete does the world need more boys with feminist mamas.

I am totally impressed with your steadfast search for Art, which looks like a great book!

I absolutely cringe when I see those Bratz dolls on Lehu (nee DP)’s neices holiday lists. Oh, and holiday lists are an irritation that I won’t get into right now…

You are a great Mama! Carry on.

Congrats on the fundraising and on your handling of LM’s fascination with those scary creatures.

Glad the fundraiser was a hit.
Glad you found “ART” (and the Flickr toy)
Re LM and Bratz… I don’t know how old LM is… but what I often did with my little one was start asking him about his thought process. “What do you like about the Bratz?” “What do you think ____ would say about them?” You learn lots about your kid (usually stuff you didn’t know, AND they know you are interested in them, not just interested in imposing yourself on them.
I’ll never forget when my then 3 yr old daughter asked me about “the F-word, Mama?” I hemmed and hawed for a while and asker her what SHE thought the F-word meant.
“FART, Mama.” I was so relieved I didn’t correct her. Later when she understood it all, she didn’t need to ask.

Hope your week is a good one.

I HATE those Bratz dolls. I think they might be worse than the other B -word: Barbie.

  • 11. Jill  |  August 1, 2007 at 8:27 pm

The bratz doll battle is one I have fought for years now. They are evil, ugly and outright offensive to me. Miss E thinks otherwise but has finally learned that she may look at them until her eyes fall out, I am not buying one nor do I care how many dollars she has saved, she is not buying one either. Whomever thought those things up should be pelted with chopped-up pieces produced when a lawnmower meets the bratz.

Good luck with your courses. I’m sure you will do just fine.
