Delights All Around
June 15, 2007
I’m so delighted today, I can barely contain my joy. This post will be an honorary Favorite Things Monday post, because I’m just ooozing favorite things.
1) Hooray Massachusetts. How I love thee! Thanks for allowing me to legally harass on a daily basis legally stay married to the woman I love.
2) Your comments. Truly. Wonderful. Heartfelt. Appreciated.
3) As I mentioned about a year ago, I’m a professional fundraiser, and one of my clients is the primary force behind this victory. Simply stated: I raised a lot of money so that Arline Isaacson could eat/sleep/breath gay marriage lobbying. So this feels like a professional victory too, one that I’m very proud of. This picture (stolen from the Globe site) makes me weak with joy.
No matter what you may read, these two women are the power behind this victory. Arline Isaacson (the one who’s weeping) is the co-Director of the Massachusetts Gay & Lesbian Political Caucus, and Norma Shapiro is the lobbyist for the Massachusetts ACLU. They’ve been lobbying on this issue together for years. In addition to the current-day consulting I’m doing, I worked very closely with them professionally about six years ago, so I know first-hand how hard they work, how powerful they are, and how much this means to them. The Globe wrote about the power of everyone who called, emailed and visited their legislators, and clearly, that won the day. Thanks to MassEquality for that! But I happen to know that Arline & Norma played a huge role in this victory and that they’re too humble to highlight their own impact. So I say — Thank you and Congratulations!! I’ll be calling donors tonight, and I plan to ask a particularly helpful donor to buy Arline a weekend at a spa. She really needs a weekend away.
4) In celebration, I got a wee present for myself. Additional background: I was supposed to start teaching again in 10 days, but my class was cancelled for under-enrollment. Yet, I’m teaching another summer class that starts in late July, so I have a small window of freedom. Yippee! A little freedom + a historic gay marriage decision + Little Man’s need for a quilt + my guilt about ignoring said need for a year = a little of this
and a heaping pile of that,

which will also become pj pants for me. I’ve been absolutely lusting over this Hippie Bus fabric for months.
5) Hello Yarn Adrian’s Ireland vacation photos. I’m mere moments (and a sugar mama) away from buying three plane tickets to Ireland. In the meantime … does anyone know if Ireland has a right-of-return policy*? You know … just in case another Republican wins the Presidency?
*[it does, but I miss it by one generation. hrumpf.]
6) Soulemama’s newest creation. I really want those little green trees and the plump green apples. Must find that fabric, despite it being sold out on Superbuzzy.
7) Kat’s amazing photo of the Boston Public Garden.
The delight of waiting for Kate Gilbert’s Marina Piccola sock pattern, which I intend to make for my SockPal using Sophie’s Toes in the Fresh Air colorway.
See? I told you I was bursting with joy. Have a great weekend y’all!

I have been brimming over with happiness since I heard the news yesterday. Such a great thing, I can’t even put words to it.

Wonderful. I think that spa weekend is well-deserved.
I miss the return policy by one generation too, though both of us probably have skills that would allow us to emigrate to most places, at least for a few more years. Thing is, Ireland is not exactly the mecca for the homo feminists, as far as public policy is concerned. I’m just saying.

Thank you for sharing your joy! I’m so glad I went to Pride and signed one of those little pink cards that essentially said, “YO Rep, vote to retain gay marriage!” I came *this close* to meeting Arline Isaacson.

Wow, you should be very proud of your contribution! Fund raising isn’t an easy job, at least in my opinion, and to do such a stellar job at it? You deserve a spa weekend as well!!!

i’m happy for you girl! i think the results of this vote are a testatment to the tireless work of these women but also of people like you and also of the state of MA. i know that in my area, during the last election the representative incumbent asshat who was for the ban lost the democratic primary to someone that no one had ever heard of who was against the ban. and during the general election he won again. so at least i don’t have to hate my neighbors. well not most of them.
i especially love the sheep fabric.
and can i audit your class? i promise not to cause any disruption. i’ll even refrain from knitting.

and if a republican wins the election i’m moving to france. (sarkosy although a conservative isn’t nearly as dangerous as mitt romney or mccain in the white house).

Although I still miss Vermont, it’s news like this that makes me proud to be a MA resident.
Love all your fabric, can’t wait to see the final product.
And you can come scrape wallpaper anytime. (How’s the bathroom you tore apart, BTW?)

I was watching your link all day yesterday. I’m going to my friends Kerry and Deb’s wedding tomorrow and was on pins and needles until the decision came through. Yea, MA. I’m so glad we don’t live in a bigot state.

hmmm. Are you sure you really don’t qualify for right-of-return? I thought if you have at least one grandparent, you are also eligible.
Anyhoo.
Congrats on the success of the marriage decision. Hooray!!

It’s wonderful that Mass. has seen the light — I only wonder what the hell is wrong with all of those other states?!

I am proud to say that I know you (even if it is only via the web)! If more of us stood up so strongly for what we beleived we would be able to bring upon more changes to the state of affairs.
Congrats all around!
Love the fabrics, and as always I am amazed at the projects you take on and finish!
Waiting for pictures!

Congrats MA gives me hope for the whole USA.
Thankfully our Prime Minister realized his election promise review of our marriage laws was a bad political move & backed off.
Love the fabric with the VW bus.

Contratulations, indeed… on the lobbying/fundraising victory as well as the valorous used of unexpected unemcumbered time. And that sock yarn looks like it would cure even the kind of BLUES that I get on occasion.

Cause for celebration indeed! Those fabrics are just perfect for a little boy’s quilt. I love the VWs - that is classic!!!

Hi, When I try to go thru the New England Knitters webring, I always reach a dead end at your old blog which doesn’t have the ring code. I’d love to be able to go thru the whole ring to see the blogs on the other side of your blogs. Don’t mean to be a pest but just wanted to alert you in case you were unaware.
Thanks!

Where did you find those fabrics? Each is more perfect than the last. You deserve to celebrate! I’ve been in a good mood for days and days, knowing that the institution of marriage will stay strong.
My family has been in this country for way too long. Maybe I could persuade Maryse to marry me? I love France. (Our respective husbands might not be too keen on this plan, but who knows, they might hit it off.)

I’m so proud of you, and of everyone who worked so hard to keep the ban off the ballot. Congratulations on an important job well done.
And OMG, B qualifies for Irish citizenship (as do our children, if he chooses to waive his right for same)! Hmmmmm …. I wonder what the weather is like in Donegal this time of year?

Yay for you, and this personal and professional victory. And thank you for all that you and so many others are doing in Mass. Really, y’all are a much needed beacon of hope for many other parts of the country. Here in Indiana I spent the evening at a meeting of folks concerned about violence against GLBT kids in the schools. And it was an emotional night, hearing stories, particularly from teachers, about the ways they have been bullied away from trying to teach a tiny bit of tolerance. Long story short, thank you for the professional time you’ve put in to showing the rest of the country how things could be.
Now I’m off to repodepo….

I enjoyed my wedding soooo much more just TWO DAYS AFTER all this went down!!! *doin’ lil extra-happy bee-dance*
You and I have the exact same taste in fabrics - yum! And “Fresh Air?” Double-yum!!!
So good to catch back up with you again, albeit virtually! (now that my head is finally emerging from its previous location lodged firmly up Bridal-H*ll’s a$$. and, yes, I am thoroughly neurotic about re-blogging again.) /:~\
