Favorite Things Monday: Gratitude
April 16, 2007
Massachusetts, how I love thee. Thanks for the day off.
Mother Nature, thanks for that nor’easter that kept me in my ankle-deep basement for 12 hours on my day off. You’re the best.
Hardware Pimp, why do you greet me with flowers every time I enter your shop? My basement thanks you for the new jumbo jet sump pump and industrial strength dehumidifier.
Kohl’s, thanks for those $5 end-of-season rainboots that I impulse-bought back in October.
Wifey, thanks for being the best MacGyver a girl could ever wish for. You may not be willing to put your hands into a 14 inch hole of muddy water, or snake a hose through the spider zone, but hotdamn, your clothes-pin mastery* makes it all worthwhile.
Hurricane Katrina, thanks for keepin’ it real in the Mafia-house today. Without you, I would’ve withered and cried at hours 4, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
For additional details, click on the pix. With any luck, I’ll be back to knitting posting soon, including the story of the Sneak Peek and the continuation of the Demolition Derby. I know … I’m a big tease.
*ETA: You dirty girls (roro). I posted the photo & story of the “clothes pin mastery” story, but I’m warning you now — it’s v.boring.

Holy Hannah - sounds intense. And I AM talking about the “clothes-pin mastery”. Where are the photos of THAT?

Argghhh… I lived with my grandparents when their basement started flooding like that. They didn’t have a sump pump. We just used a broom and swept the water out the door.
Anyway, I think I have a crush on your rain boots.

Is it wrong that I’m focusing on the boots and not the pain?

Our basement flooded, too. It always does with a storm like that, and we do have a pump. I guess spiffy boots can make everything a little better.

Nice boots! I need some … can you believe that our basement stayed DRY??? (Well, the under-craft-room crawl space got 3 or 4 inches of water, but the main basement was dry.) Our sump pump got a good workout …

Love the boots! I’m sure I would have broken down by hour 2 for sure.

All hail the impulse buy that turns out to be damn useful! I love it when that happens. So, what did the wifey do with the clothespins?

Sigh … the trials of home ownership. Thank goodness we didn’t have one of those moments this weekend ourselves. I got to knit instead! [I don't even know if I own any hairpins anymore]

Love, love, love those boots. Must check Kohl’s.
I’m the sump pump pro in my house, too. My husband appears to have some sort of mental block that makes him unable to switch out a hose or replace a pump.

Eek. I’m dealing with the opposite problem - water coming in through the roof rather than the basement. Oh, plus that little issue of 3/4 of the roads to my house being closed at the moment. Let’s hope it stops soon…

OK, I’m officially shutting up now about my basement.
Did you install that pump YOURSELF? Holy moley! What about the hole for it in the floor, was that you too? With a freaking jackhammer or something? GAH!
Oh, and the dehumidifier? Best. Purchase. Ever. We love ours.

Well, you’ve been busy! Your new dog is so cute and I love little man’s Easter egg hunt photos. Hope all is well…I’ll be by sometime soon for knitting group.

I still remember the look on my Mother’s face every spring after a thunderstorm when the basement would flood (always in the middle of the night) and she would be scooping up water with a margarine container while Dad and four kids “helped” her with the mop and our own containers. If she ever said the words, I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t be nice ones.
I hope your basement is dried out now and love the puppy! So cute, naughty, but very cute.

You rock! Sump pump - you’ve beat my gutter story hands down. And in super chic AND utilitarian boots no less - you’re my new hero.
