Scary

October 11, 2006

For all the parents out there, please be aware of recent events over at Little Birds. For the last couple years, Stephanie Barnes has been sharing photos of her crafts and her adorable kids. But she shut down her blog this weekend after learning that photos of her children were copied and used in inappropriate ways. She’s not providing details, and doesn’t wish to discuss the matter any further.

But we don’t need any additional information; this is a warning bell. Our blogs are public. Truly public. I sometimes hear craft/knit/crochet/quilt/etc bloggers say that we’re somehow safer because ‘outsiders’ aren’t interested in our niche blogs. But … we’re also more likely to post family photos, so I believe, that makes us more vulnerable.

We live in a scary world. Be careful.

Thanks for the warning. I’ve been posting more and more pictures of my nieces and nephews on my blog lately. I’m not going to post any more pictures of them and just stick to the dog and the knitting. A shame that a few sick individuals mean that my friends far away can’t keep up with my family this way anymore.

Flickr gives you the ability to choose to limit who sees what pictures - I’ve used this feature when posting pictures of myself to that site. I’ve made it so if you click some of my pictures (without me) and get taken to the flickr site, you can see more ‘family’ pictures if I know you and have given you access. Just a thought on how to continue to stay in touch with friends/family from far away.

When my nephew was born, I went overboard and stupidly posted his stats on my site. My sister acted appropriately, and my eyes were opened to the “bad people” in this world. Nowadays, I only post the kids’ first names and pictures when expressly asked. I do hope Stephanie and her children are okay.

So true, sometimes we get over excited and bad things can happen.

The world is a scary freakin’ place. I made it policy to only refer to the Boyfriend’s kids as “The Oldest” and “The Youngest” and never to post pictures of them for that reason and that their mother is a quasi-celebrity and they didn’t need any more attention drawn to them than they already get. It’s hard because sometimes I want to show these two young women being their goofy selves, but the trade-off just isn’t worth it. Very sad, when you think about it like that.

Thanks for this post. It is disturbing and completely horrible that the world cannot be trusted. I never posted nude photos of lili for that reason, but now I am wondering if innocent dressed photos can also be altered. Lili was in a magazine this fall also, so she is getting some heavy exposure. I had a creepy email last week from a man on myspace who watched Lili’s video and wanted me to email him the video as an attachment. Time for tighter security measures. I hope you remember me, we hung out after Joya’s concert.
