Shawl

March 29, 2006

As the irises push pointy green spikes out of the soil, I start dreaming about days of short sleeves and capris. And I’m reminded of uncontrollable office air conditioning. So I’m thinking about a shawl, but it’s terribly hard to find a not-girly, not-gramma shawl pattern. Last year, I made the Not-Knit-Round scarf, but I hardly ever wear it. First, it still sheds. Second, I have to pull it over my head and arrange.it.just.so. Third, it’s a smidge too trendy, and I’m convinced that I won’t notice when it becomes ’so last year.’ I want something I can just wrap around me like a big smushy hug.

For the moment, I’m in love with this shawl pattern SANS POINTS. I read the pattern and the points are done last, as an add-on, so it would be easy-peasy to leave them off. Thoughts?

This is motivation to rip the 5 thrift store sweaters I have in my stash, because I’m on a serious yarn diet.

Does the hair come with it? Because I really like her hair. But, um, oh, relevant thought. I think it would be okay without the points, but it would probably need some sort of border… could you do big points/angles to mirror the patterning?

Yeah, I can see you wearing that. What color??

Hey, that’s on my to knit list, too, for the same reason. I actually started it this weekend, but needed to go up a needle size. :) Good luck!

Love the shawl. I personally like the points, but I won’t be wearing it. The pattern is kinda lacey and elegant but not too dressy. I’d love to make something like that, but wouldn’t wear it of course. I could give it to someone but its time I start knitting something for me. Good luck!

I’ve also been staring at that same shawl, trying to decide….

On the one hand, the points are, well…pointy. :( On the other, knit up in a nice, dramatic navy or black it would be sort of edgy and (dare I say it) just a teensy bit Goth -or is that just wishful thinking on my part? So I’m having a hard time deciding.

Now maybe I can wait to see how yours turns out. Hooray!

Also, I have us a green finisher’s medal that I think I finally like. I’ll email it to you, hopefully this evening if the laptop is cooperative.

why are you saying you don’t know me!?! are we in a fight? or are you just embarrassed to admit we’re friends?

The points seem a bit Bat Girl to me. But maybe that’s a good thing?

I like the taylored look of the shawl, until my eye goes down to the points. Not sure about those… reminds me of Peter Pan or something. If it was a curved edge I think it would suit you better. But then, it’s to keep the air conditioning off your shoulders right? m-m-m-m

Yes, not girlie, not grandma, and I agree about leaving off the points. Yes yes yes.

Oh goddess, find another shawl. Loosing the points won’t help unless you also find a way to smooth out the deep v shapes in the pattern. I beg you - don’t be stevie knicks dressed up as a woolie spiderman.

PS - I need the help of some crafty folk!!! My famous nanny refuses to use her cane…it’s your standard grandma aluminum 4 footed cane with a grippy handle. I thought maybe she’d use it if it were more fun. I want to cover it in faux fur along the cane part and maybe sequins or something on the bottom feet. Who has suggestions for glue or other sticky stuff that will hold the fabric to the alumninum??? Anyone? Other ideas for fancying up nanny’s cane? I’m a craft idiot.

Now, my cane would be covered in neoprene for all-weatherability in ocean, sun and mountains and have retractable spikes on the feet for ice climbing and traction…naturally the grip would have hand warmers…perhaps a built in pedometer and swiss army multi-tool holder…oh and a big knife would come out of the shaft, james bond style just in case i needed to kick some ass. My evening wear cane would be black suede with a tapered handle and a single row of tiny tiny tiny tiny diamonds slowly swirling down the handle…the grip would have a little hidden compartment for a key, lipstick and a packet of lube for those grandma nights on the town when you don’t want to carry a purse and might get lucky. ahahah. fun. mafia post a poll - what would your cane look like?
